Robin van Persie makes Fenerbahce debut in Shakhtar Donetsk draw

Robin van Persie could not inspire Fenerbahce to victory on his debut as the Turkish side were held to a 0-0 draw by Shakhtar Donetsk. The Dutch international, who joined Fenerbahce on a three-year deal from Manchester United, came off the bench with 68 minutes on the clock in Istanbul to join former United teammate Nani who started for the Turkish giants. However, he was unable to break the deadlock in the Champions League qualifying third-round clash as it finished goalless. Anywhere But Wing-Back For Sterling...

When I first worked with him he was fast and could play wide, now he can play in a number of positions...he's one of the most tactically gifted players I have worked with; how he presses the ball, how he gets up to the ball and his technique is wonderful. He's more than pace. What he has got for a young player is responsibility on the pitch" - Brendan Rodgers. Such is Sterling's versatility - having played everywhere from right wing-back to centre-forward for Liverpool - his arrival at Manchester City presents his new coach with a variety of options. While the £49million man is unlikely to be asked to resume wing-back duties, Pellegrini will be weighing up plenty of other possibilities... Ready-made for right wing? Playing on the right in a 4-2-3-1 formation would be a good fit for Sterling and could also bring the best out of other key men at Manchester City. One of City's issues has been the conundrum of how to get the best from Sergio Aguero while retaining a solid defensive structure - a point made by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville in his Telegraph column. 'If you go to a 4-3-3, I believe you lose too much from Aguero's game,' claimed Neville. 'Aguero is not as effective without a strike partner. He thrives with support. The problem with this system is it leaves Aguero up front on his own which means he can become isolated.' That could be rather less of a factor given Sterling's interpretation of the role. While Jesus Navas favours hogging the touch-line, Sterling is able to play more of a roaming role - supporting his striker by running beyond him to good effect. Navas failed to score in 2,248 minutes of Premier League action last season and while the new arrival is far from prolific, this compares unfavourably with Sterling's scoring record of seven last term.

Lee McCulloch: Rangers players deserved criticism

Chairman Dave King, who, along with his allies, gained control of the club in March, described the team as "very inadequate" last season and said some of the players who were out of contract had "failed miserably". The Ibrox club endured another season of off-field drama but while some players chose to hit back at King’s comments, McCulloch refused to join them. "I think we deserved it, all the players deserved it," the former Motherwell and Wigan player said. "The full dressing room, not just the players that were out of contract and not just the senior players.I think every single player deserved criticism and I think it was dressed up the wrong way in some quarters of the press that it was just the boys that were out of contract. You'll not get me moaning about that." The former Scotland international repeatedly described the campaign as a "car crash" but took responsibility for the shortcomings despite pointing to the exit of former manager Ally McCoist as the crucial moment when the season imploded. McCulloch added: "When Ally left, everything blew wide open. It was amazing the pressure he took off the players. "Stuart McCall gave us a lift but we fell well short in the play-off final." McCulloch was frustrated at being unable to air his thoughts in his final season but he believes his experience will stand him in good stead as he begins a new chapter of his career with Kilmarnock. And he is intent on looking back at the positives from his time with Rangers and the impressive trophy haul he managed to collect, especially under former boss Walter Smith.

Fifa crisis: Concacaf begins path to reform after scandal

It is easy to get confused at times by the various acronyms of football's continental confederations. But for a while now, it has been very clear what Concacaf stands for. And it certainly has not been good governance. The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football has been at the heart of the corruption crisis that has engulfed Fifa. And yet, surprising as it may seem to many, the governing body is now hoping to set an example when it comes to reforms. A brief reminder of Concacaf's summer so far. First its president, Jeffrey Webb, was arrested on corruption charges along with his vice-president Eduardo Li. Together with former Concacaf president Jack Warner, they were among 14 soccer officials and sports-marketing executives charged with paying or accepting more than $150m (£96m) in bribes and kickbacks over more than two decades related to the media and marketing rights for matches in Concacaf competitions. The FBI raided Concacaf's Miami base, and its general-secretary Enrique Sanz was provisionally banned by Fifa's ethics committee. Also indicted were Julio Rocha, a Fifa development officer from Nicaragua who had been inducted into Concacaf's Hall of Fame, and Aaron Davidson, the president of the sponsorship rights agency Traffic Sports USA - which worked with Concacaf. Meanwhile, it was revealed that former Concacaf general-secretary Chuck Blazer had pleaded guilty to several charges related to corruption in 2013, including arranging and agreeing to accept bribes to influence voting for countries hoping to host the 1998 and 2010 World Cups.

Danny Ings hopes to learn from Daniel Sturridge at Liverpool

He's an unbelievable striker," Ings said of Sturridge. "He is one of those players who has come through the ranks, he has not had it easy. Now he's here and he's established; he's a fantastic, talented football player I can learn from." England U21 international Ings, whose fee is set to be decided by tribunal, was attracting interest from across Europe ahead of the expiration of his contract with Burnley at the end of last season, but he insists Liverpool was the only place he wanted to be. Ings says his farewells to Burnley fans Ings says his farewells to Burnley fans "As soon as I knew that Liverpool were interested, it was a no-brainer," he told LFCTV. "It was the only club on my mind, to be fair. And now that it has happened, it's fantastic for me and my family. "It's a special club, everybody knows it. With all the history that's here...it's definitely a massive step in my career and I'm over the moon." Ings decided to turn down the chance to wear an iconic squad number and opted instead for No 28. "I had a chat with my agent and a few friends and we thought that moving to such a big club like this, you need to take all the pressure off yourself," he said.

Danny Ings hopes to learn from Daniel Sturridge at Liverpool

New Liverpool striker Danny Ings is looking forward to playing alongside Daniel Sturridge this season. Ings, 22, is eager to make his mark at Anfield after completing his move from Burnley last month and is keen to learn from England international Sturridge. Sturridge had an injury-hit campaign last term and scored just four goals, but was much more impressive the previous year as he netted 21 goals in a lethal partnership with Luis Suarez.

Jay Rodriguez scores twice on Southampton comeback

Jay Rodriguez scored twice on his first appearance for more than a year as Southampton were beaten 5-4 by Red Bull Leipzig. And he marked his return to the pitch with two close-range finishes - one with his left foot, the other with his head - to add to goals from new signings Juanmi and Cedric Soares. He told the club website: "I’m happy about the minutes and the physical game what we had. We scored some great goals and the positive things were two goals and the first 45 minutes of Jay. "It was his first 45 minutes and he did well. He scored two good goals. That gives everyone a positive feeling about tonight and for sure the same for Jay. "Also we had the first goal of Juanmi, the first goal of Cedric Soares. A lot of positive things, and the result is not the most important."
