Arjen Robben & Robert Lewandowski injuries for Bayern

Arjen Robben will miss the rest of Bayern Munich's season, including their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, after tearing calf muscles.

The Dutch winger suffered the injury 16 minutes after making a return from a five-week absence as a substitute in Bayern's German Cup semi-final defeat by Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

Striker Robert Lewandowski was also injured, fracturing his nose and jaw.

But the Poland international hopes to make the first leg at Barca on 6 May.

"It's a few more days till the match at Camp Nou, I really hope I will be able to play," said Lewandowski, who was knocked to the ground by Dortmund goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak in extra time before a 2-0 penalty shootout defeat in which Bayern missed all of their spot-kicks.

The newly-crowned Bundesliga champions said more medical checks would be required to determine the length of Lewandowski's absence and that the 26-year-old had also been concussed.

Robben, 31, was returning from an abdominal injury suffered in March, a problem that meant he missed both legs of Bayern's 7-4 aggregate win over FC Porto in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Following the first leg in Portgual, Bayern doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt resigned after 38 years with the club, claiming the medical department had been blamed for the absence of key players' in the 3-1 defeat.

The former England right-back has been in and out of Brendan Rodgers' plans this season and he has been linked in several papers with a move to Premier League rivals West Ham.

Johnson started his career at Upton Park, making his debut in 2002, and went on to join Chelsea and Portsmouth before arriving at Liverpool in 2009 - he has since made over 200 appearances for the Reds.

He started the 1-0 defeat at Hull on Tuesday night and was questioned about his Anfield future afterwards.

When asked whether he was resigned to leaving, Johnson told Sky Sports: "I would have thought so - I haven't got a contract.

"We'll have to wait and see (if that is going to change).

"I don't think so but we have to wait and see."

Bournemouth effectively sealed a £100m promotion to the Premier League - just seven years after the south-coast club almost went out of business.

Victory over Bolton took the Cherries three points clear of third-placed Middlesbrough with just one game left.

Only defeat, a Boro win and a 20-goal swing on the final day of the season can deny them a top-flight spot.

Goals from Marc Pugh, Matt Ritchie and Callum Wilson sparked wild scenes of celebration amongst the home fans.

Bournemouth's impending promotion marks an amazing rise through the Football League for the club, who were in administration and close to liquidation in 2008.

They only just avoided relegation in 2009 - Eddie Howe's first season as manager - but promotion to League One followed the season after.

Former Cherries defender Howe then led them into the Championship in 2013 after returning to the south coast from Burnley.

Howe's contribution cannot be overstated, with the 37-year-old set to join an elite band of managers to guide a club through the Football League and into the top flight.

"This club was on its knees six years ago," Howe told BBC Radio 5 live.

"We had nothing. A group of supporters put their money in their pockets to keep the club alive and they are reaping the rewards. It is the club I watched as a kid, the club that gave me an opportunity in the game as a player and a manager.

"It shouldn't be them thanking me, it should be me thanking them. It is a family club and deserves its moment in the sun."

Bournemouth's success this season owes much to the goals of record signing Wilson, a £3m capture from Coventry at the start of the season.

Both Wilson and Ritchie went close to giving the Cherries the lead several times in a frenetic opening.

But after several fine saves from Adam Bogdan, the opener arrived on 39 minutes, when Pugh beat the Bolton goalkeeper with a left-foot shot.

It prompted joy in the stands of the 11,700-capacity Goldsands Stadium - and there was better to come just four minutes later, when Ritchie latched onto Yann Kermorgant's lay-off to drive home from 12 yards.

Bournemouth's fans started signing the theme tune to Match of the Day as the realisation hit home that they would be seeing their side in the top flight of English football for the first time in the club's history.

Kermorgant had the chance to make the final 20 minutes a formality, but he blazed over the bar from the penalty spot after Dorian Dervite was dismissed for hauling down Wilson.

Wilson made it 3-0 after he spun and shot smartly past Bogdan to turn the remaining 12 minutes into a carnival.

The final whistle sparked a pitch invasion from home fans, who could yet be celebrating the Championship title if results go their way on Saturday.

Azpilicueta: The Wind Beneath Hazard's Wings

'Dave' seems a strangely appropriate nickname for Cesar Azpilicueta. His style is founded on such a deliberate lack of flamboyancy that there is an aptness about the moniker given to him by his Chelsea teammates. Anything polysyllabic would seem superfluous.

The actual reason for the pet name is a little less poetic. "Cesar's not even that hard, but some said my name was too difficult to pronounce and could they call me Dave. It's stuck," Azpilicueta told the Daily Telegraph in 2013. "But I suppose Azpilicueta is tricky," he concluded, with more than a touch of generosity.

Of all Chelsea's transfers over the last five years, few can have caused less of an initial ripple than Azpilicueta, an uncapped Spaniard signed for £7m from Olympique de Marseille. L'OM had just finished tenth in Ligue Un, 34 points behind Montpellier.

Arriving four days before his 23rd birthday, Azpilicueta was intended to be the back-up right-back to Branislav Ivanovic. Eleven players have since joined him at Stamford Bridge for higher fees, but none have displayed his consistency and professionalism.

Gary Neville takes these compliments further, describing Azpilicueta as the best defender in the Premier League. "For technical defending, not making a mistake, not being in the wrong position, not getting caught out... I don't see him making a mistake," Neville said. "When I watch him, he's as near to perfect as possible when it comes to defending; he's immaculate." High praise indeed.

Look at the list of Chelsea's most regular Premier League starters since the day Azpilicueta made his league debut: Branislav Ivanovic 92, Eden Hazard 86, Gary Cahill 76, Cesar Azpilicueta 75. A back-up full-back has become one of the club's key players.

Chelsea have won 74% of their matches with Azpilicueta in the side this season, but just 50% without. The opponents for those seven victories in his absence: Maribor, QPR, Hull (2), Swansea, Shrewsbury and Sporting Lisbon. 'Dave' doesn't miss the big games.

The stereotype modern full-back is a player closer to attacker than midfielder. You could even go stronger still: The full-back is the ultimate modern footballer. They are the only position on the pitch with space in front of them, the advent of 4-2-3-1 and the double pivot in central midfield given them greater licence to roam forward. The emergence of high pressing strategies and renaissance of counter-attacking dictates that full-backs are expected to sprint back as quickly as they venture forward.

Glen Johnson describes it perfectly: "The modern full-back is very much an attacking outlet: as midfields get narrower it's us who have to get up and down and offer width. Embrace it, you're action man."

Roberto Carlos, Dani Alves and Maicon were three Brazilian standard-bearers for the revolution, but their success was replicated in countless other countries. England can boast a plethora of options: Luke Shaw, Nathaniel Clyne, Kieran Gibbs, Aaron Cresswell, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose. This is the next generation, phasing out those with similar traits. You could not wish for a more adventurous full-back pairing than Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson.

The Premier League is now littered with full-backs who are more comfortable moving forward than back. Their performance is now measured in crosses completed, assists provided and chances created, rather than tackles made or crosses blocked.

Azpilicueta is the exception to that rule. He is a relic of the time when defenders defended and attackers attacked, an anachronism of the modern full-back. Whilst Shaw, Rose or Clyne could make competent wingers (and Gareth Bale moved even higher up the pitch), you would rely on Azpilicueta at any place in the back four.

"We have to be strong defensively to give the attacking players the confidence to play with freedom," is his assessment of his role. That quote could be Jose Mourinho's managerial epitaph, sitting just above the dates of the trophies he has won.

It is this defensive reliability that explains Mourinho's decision to convert Azpilicueta to a left-back so early in his return to Chelsea. On the right wing, the discipline of Willian allows Ivanovic to maraud forward, explaining the Serbian's eight goals and assists combined in the league this season. On the left, Azpilicueta stays deeper to provide Hazard with the licence to stay forward. An average touch map for this season shows Ivanovic one side of the halfway line, and Azpilicueta the other.

Hazard is not excused from Mourinho's demand for high-energy commitment, but is permitted to operate with greater liberation than any other Chelsea player.

"I played against him [Hazard] in France and when I came here we knew each other a little bit," the Spaniard said when explaining the on-field connection between the pair. "The relationship is good because we're more or less the same age and we speak French. I know every time I give him the ball he's going to do something different." Sometimes football can be a simple game.

"Eden is a great player, younger than Messi or Ronaldo, and therefore has more capacity for improvement, Azpilicueta says. "I think in the future he could win the Ballon d'Or, he has the quality." The left-back is unlikely win any personal accolades of his own, but behind every superstar is a facilitator. Azpilicueta is the wind beneath Hazard's wings.

Things have not always been easy since arriving from Pamplona via the Cote d'Azur. Azpilicueta drew four and lost two of his first six matches for Chelsea, and saw Roberto di Matteo sacked in the middle of that run. He had three managers in his first year at Stamford Bridge, and also saw Filipe Luis arrive to challenge his first-team place last summer.

The Spaniard simply takes it all in his stride. "I tried to get as quick as possible into the new role," he said on playing on the left flank. "It is more or less the same [as right-back], but I play with different players and use my left foot more. I did work on my left, I tried to improve and be better. In the big teams, there is always competition and the competition helps us to improve. I like the competition and fight for my place every day." It's easy to see why he is well-liked at Stamford Bridge.

A similar pattern emerges. Azpilicueta is meticulous, hard-working and hungry to learn. In almost three years at Chelsea he has seen off the notable competition of Luis and Ashley Cole. The signing of the Brazilian for £16m seemed to indicate disbelief from the club that Azpilicueta could sustain his form of last season. In fairness, he hasn't; he's got better.

"Azpilicueta is unbeatable," says Mourinho. "For many, many matches I haven't seen one player beat Azpilicueta in an individual duel." It's true, too. You struggle to think of a time when a winger truly got the better of him over the course of a match.

With a new five-year deal signed in September, Azpilicueta could be a long-term fixture in Chelsea's defence. It's a status quo that his manager is more than comfortable with. "Champions League is the competition I think everybody wants to win in football," says Mourinho. "It is not just about the pure talent. Football is also about character and personality.

"I think a team with 11 Azpilicuetas could win the Champions League," the Portuguese concludes. You'd struggle to think of a greater compliment.

Klopp Over Rodgers? Not On Your Nelly

I know that Liverpool supporters everywhere are depressed after going out to Aston Villa managed by a man who once decided he could manage better from the stands than on the touch line, but life goes on.
The call for Rodgers is knee jerk and ignorant. Liverpool's woes are down to growing pains for both manager and ownership. Liverpool received a boat load of cash in the summer when losing Suarez and put all their eggs in one basket trying to replace a Suarez (with Sanchez) when in reality all they needed was another Sturridge.

It is fair to target Rodgers success in the transfer market at this point, his ability to makes players better is there for all to see. Next season Liverpool will already be in a better position with the arrival for Origi because he is the type of player that can come in to Sturridge's roll. While Origi hasn't lit up the French league this year, it's hard to argue that Rodgers won't help him reach the next level given what his coaching and management has done for Coutinho, Sterling, Suarez, and Sturridge.

I also feel the holes in which Liverpool need to fill are much more transparent than last year. And while some may panic over Sterling's future they have a ready made replacement in Markovic. Selling Sterling right now may be the best for all parties involved, especially given his display against Villa yesterday.

It would be irresponsible of me to write a post Villa email and not mention the massive elephant in the room, Steven George Gerrard.
I place the semi final loss to Villa squarely at the feet of Gerrard. While it is Rodgers who chooses the players and picks the formation, one gets the feeling he didn't have a choice in the matter. The decision to move Gerrard from the front 3 to protector of the back 4 was the nail in the coffin. It was a tactical decision that has undermined Liverpool all season but with Gerrard so woefully ineffective in his starting role it was the only other option other than taking him off, which was never going to happen. Thankfully Rodgers will only have this dilemma for another 6 games.

Memories are short and I remember Liverpool seasons being over at the beginning of March during some of the Rafa years. This season has been entertaining with 2 semi-finals and a fighting shot at a Champions League spot. Chin up Liverpool fans football is a marathon not a sprint and we are well set up for the future.

I wrote into the mailbox this morning and referred to the man-beast that is Christian Benteke. However having read your profile piece on Jack Grealish and seeing the accompanying picture, I think its fair to say that the real Villa man-beast is their new no 10 schemer!

You Can't Be Serious
just finished reading the Winners and Losers article, and there are a few questions I have on it;
1) Why was Villa not in the winners section for a really good performance against Liverpool?
2) Chelsea actually went out the same stage as Arsenal and Man City (to be more technically they were the first ones out of them three)
Finally to my fellow United supporters, please stop moaning about Jose's tactics, we all knew that was how he was going to set them up and they nailed it to a T. Fair play to them they have been the better side all season and deserve their title...looking forward to next season and United bringing it back home (with the right signings made in the summer).

Josh Meekings admits he got lucky as Inverness beat Celtic

Josh Meekings admitted luck was on his side as Inverness beat Celtic to progress to their first Scottish Cup final.

The Hoops were leading 1-0 when defender Meekings appeared to stop a close-range goal-bound header from Leigh Griffiths with his hand but the official behind the goal, Alan Muir, and referee Steven McLean waved away penalty appeals.

The decision left Celtic boss Ronny Deila and his players fuming as Craig Gordon was later sent off for tripping Marley Watkins to concede a penalty, which Greg Tansey scored.

David Raven grabbed the extra-time winner for the Highlanders after John Guidetti had cancelled out Inverness striker Edward Ofere's low drive.

However, Meekings felt Caley were rewarded for their ambition after lining up in a 4-4-2 formation and taking the game to Celtic.

He said: "It has come off my arm, but he is two yards away from me. I have just gone to throw my body in the way. Unfortunately it has come off my hand but fortunately it hasn't been given.

"There was a long way to go and we still had a lot to do. It's always going to be difficult against Celtic so when you get decisions like that it's a bonus.

"I thought we played really well, we passed it really well and pressed them a lot better than we did last week when we played them."

Meekings, whose side will play Falkirk in the final, added: "It's a massive achievement for all of us. It's something that the club has never done before and for it to be this bunch of boys to have taken us there is massive.

"It's down to us. We know we believe in each other to go on and win the final. We have to make sure we are ready to go one better."

John Carver wary of protests ahead of home clash with Tottenham

Newcastle boss John Carver hopes the planned protests from fans over the running of the club do not detract from his efforts to lift his side in the closing weeks of the season.

Sunday's home clash with Tottenham, live on Sky Sports 1 from 4pm, is likely to be played in a difficult atmosphere for the home side with a social media campaign to persuade supporters to stay away ongoing amid protests against owner Mike Ashley.

The atmosphere at the club reminds Carver of the situation when fans turned on then boss Alan Pardew in May last year during a 3-0 home win over Cardiff.

Pardew remained largely on the bench during that game and Carver, who patrolled the technical area as Pardew's assistant that day, is hoping for a less febrile atmopshere against Spurs.

"It was one of the strangest atmospheres I've ever experienced, but we got there in the end," he said.

"I hope it won't be as difficult an atmosphere this time. I don't think it will be, I think it will be a different type of protest.

"The fact that people are staying away, the people who come into the stadium will be behind the team because they understand where we are and everyone will be in it together."

Carver insists he has been assured by managing director Lee Charnley there is an acceptance within the club that significant investment is required in the summer.

"I don't know anything about any figures - I'm not an accountant. But it's going to be a decent amount of money. It has to be," he added.

"What we want is quality, we need quality in key areas. If it's four, five, six... I really don't know. Without going into too much detail, I think we all know which areas.

"We all realise we are all in this together. Lee has said, 'We've left you a little bit short'. They realise the situation I'm in and they realise that it's a difficult one, and that's why I'm convinced they are going to have to invest.

"Whether it was me or whether it was Sir Alex [Ferguson] doing this job, they would need investment."

Abuse of players via social media 'worrying', says PFA's Bobby Barnes

PFA deputy chief executive Bobby Barnes has called on social media providers to do more to tackle online racial abuse after alarming findings presented by the Kick It Out campaign.

Statistics collated for the anti-discrimination body by Tempero and Brandwatch show there were nearly 135,000 instances of direct abuse aimed at Premier League teams and players between August 2014 and March 2015. It is also estimated there has been an abusive and discriminatory post made every 2.6 minutes this season.

Mario Balotelli received the most abusive mentions of any Premier League player with more than 52 per cent of the 8,000 offensive posts about him of a racist nature.

"I think these statistics are very worrying," Barnes told Sky Sports News HQ.

"What they highlight is that new media has provided another platform for those bigots behind keyboards who are not so intelligent to have an opportunity to get their messages across to both the clubs and the players.

"It's sad because on the one hand Twitter and other social outlets have been a real vehicle to ensure players have the opportunity to engage with the fans, and stuff like this does little to encourage them to do so.

"I would certainly urge the providers to co-operate more strongly with the law enforcement authorities to make sure what are effectively crimes that are being committed over the airwaves, are being dealt with rather than being a safe haven for what I would call those ‘cowards behind keyboards’.

"It's very brave to make derogatory comments about somebody safely sitting behind your computer, but on the other hand I don't think any of those people would be quite so forthcoming when they are actually face-to-face with their victims.

"In an ideal world, I think you’d have more of a compulsion on the part of the providers to actually, on request, provide the information because if crimes are being committed, I think it’s wrong that those who are unwittingly conveying those messages are able to not release the information to the authorities."
