Hartlepool's new owner has offered manager Ronnie Moore and his assistant Sam Collins new long-term contracts. Last Updated: 24/06/15 4:47pm Hartlepool's new owner has offered manager Ronnie Moore and his assistant Sam Collins new long-term contracts. Recruitment firm JPNG completed its takeover of the club on Monday and new chairman Gary Coxall has wasted little time in rewarding the management duo for the club's unlikely relegation escape last season. When asked what was at the top of his to-do list since replacing former chairman Ken Hodcroft, Coxall told the Hartlepool Mail: "A new contract, longer term, for Ronnie and Sam. The club were 10 points adrift of safety at one stage following Moore's arrival, but guaranteed their Football League status with a game to spare.

Port Vale snap up Grant Port Vale manager Rob Page has further bolstered his squad with the signing of former Crewe midfielder Anthony Grant.

Anthony will be a great addition to our squad and will really help strengthen the midfield area," said Page. "He has performed very well for Crewe over the last couple of years and we're delighted to have him on board as we head into the new season." Grant was a regular for Crewe since signing on a free transfer from Stevenage in the summer of 2013. He was runner up in the Alex's player of the year awards for last season, finishing only behind goalkeeper Ben Garratt. The former Chelsea trainee started 42 league games during the 2014/15 campaign and was outstanding in his side's 2-1 win at home to Vale last September. Grant has also had spells at Southend, Luton, Wycombe and Oldham. Promoted stories

England U21 1-3 Italy U21: Gareth Southgate's men sent home after second defeat

England crashed out of the European U21 Championship as they lost 3-1 to Italy to finish bottom of Group B. Andrea Belotti and Marco Benassi scored within two first-half minutes, after Danny Ings had already spurned a glorious chance and Harry Kane saw one effort well saved. Gareth Southgate’s men were unable to find a way back into the game, and Benassi added his second of the night before Nathan Redmond struck in injury-time for little consolation. Italy’s win wasn't enough to see them through, though, as Portugal and Sweden drew 1-1 to both go through and knock the Azzurri out. England started brightly, with the addition of Ings to the starting line-up looking like a good move by Southgate. Liverpool’s new signing nearly repaid the coach’s faith as Kane collected the ball and played a wonderful ball through for him, but he could only fire wide with the goal at his mercy. Danny Ings spurned a glorious chance early on Danny Ings spurned a glorious chance early on Then Kane, who came into the tournament with the weight of expectation after a superb season at Tottenham, went close to getting his first of the competition after bringing down Carl Jenkinson’s superb diagonal ball with a touch to match, but his curling effort was turned away by Bardi. England fell behind almost instantly as, on 25 minutes, the highly rated Domenico Berardi cut in from the right before swinging in a cross with his left. England’s defence was caught flat and Belotti broke the line to meet the ball with a superb volley into the top corner. It went from bad to worse just two minutes later, when Lorenzo Cristeig was allowed to run unchallenged to the edge of the area before he found Benassi, whose right-footed effort took a deflection and evaded Jack Butland to roll into the bottom corner. Southgate’s men were left with it all to do after the break, and they started the second half as brightly as they did the first, but again they couldn't take their chances as Jesse Lingard – who netted the winner against Sweden – showed some lovely footwork to find some space in the area before firing wide of the target.

First team coach Kevin Bond will leave QPR at the end of this month

Redknapp left QPR in February this year and Chris Ramsey, who took over on an interim basis, was unable to keep the club in the Premier League. Ramsey has nonetheless been named permanent manager ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign but Bond will not be staying in place. A statement on the QPR website read: “The club would like to place on the record it’s thanks to Kevin for his services to QPR and wish him well for the future. “A further announcement regarding Chris Ramsey’s backroom team will be made in due course.”

Richards Must Act To Curb The Decline There aren't many who wouldn't want Micah Richards to succeed, but his fall from grace has been pronounced. Villa Park is the new home of a former Bright Young Thing...

Micah Richards turns 27 next week, another example of football's innate ability to play tricks on the mind. Where did that fresh-faced defender go? How is he possibly less than five years younger than James Collins? What have we all been doing with our lives? Richards is still England's youngest ever defender, beating Rio Ferdinand to that honour when called up by Steve McClaren in 2006. Quick, strong and skilful, he started six competitive international matches before turning 20. This was Gary Neville for a new generation, England's answer at right-back. A gem had been unearthed in Manchester, via Oldham. How quickly exciting potential becomes wasted opportunity. Richards has transformed from tomorrow's answer to yesterday's man. Following his release by Manchester City, the defender has joined Aston Villa on a four-year deal. While his old side compete for the title, Richards seeks regular football at the club who have finished 16th, 15th, 15th and 17th in the last four Premier League seasons. An England international defender in the prime of his career joining one English club from another should be big news, as the aforementioned Ferdinand can testify. Richards, however, will slip out of a side door at the Etihad, his departure met with neither anguish nor celebration. There is nothing as demeaning as being ignored. Richards' decline is symbolised by the inevitability of his departure from City. This is a club whose only homegrown options for next season are a first-choice goalkeeper, a 29-year-old French left-back and a 37-year-old goalkeeper whose last Premier League start was in 2007. City were keen to let Richards leave on loan last season, yet Dedryck Boyata made two Premier League appearances. There was talk of interest from Juventus and Internazionale in Richards last summer, but a move to Fiorentina only served to continue the alarming decline. He started only seven Serie A Matches, criticised by coach Vicenzo Montella in January for his lack of fitness. "His fitness levels weren't up to scratch," Montella said. "He is more of a full-back in a four-man defence and when he arrived, in my view, his fitness levels weren't up to scratch to sustain that role." Very few in Florence will have mourned his retreat back to the Premier League. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Richards attempted to improve his PR by claiming disbelief at his lack of minutes in Italy. "I don't know whether it's because I've been on loan and I haven't made a commitment to stay," he said. "No disrespect to the players here, I feel I should have been playing." The article described Richards as a 'football obsessive' and 'renaissance man'. One doth protest too much? Once renowned for his pace and endeavour to surge forward, disagreements with the views of various managers has become the new hallmark of Richards' career. When Roberto Mancini was City boss, he famously reminded his defender to "remember to pick up his brain". "He has good quality but sometimes Micah thinks he can play at only 50%," Mancini said. "If Micah plays to 100%, he can become one of the top full-backs in Europe. But he needs to improve. His body is on the pitch, but his mind is left at home sometimes." And that's coming from one of his fans.

The Women Are A Cleansing Sorbet...

There's too much football. It's fine to admit it. It's utterly relentless, a bombardment of games and tournaments and friendlies, just when we thought the season was over. The FA Cup final was followed by the Champions League final after which came a couple of England games then the Copa America and oh sweet fancy Moses the European Under-21 Championships is about to start. You start to feel like Roberto Duran being smacked around, but with perpetual football rather than Sugar Ray Leonard's fists. No más, no más, no más. However, the Women's World Cup feels different, somehow. Your friend and mine Johnny Nicholson wrote about the many reasons the tournament is great a couple of weeks ago, so there's no need to run through them again, but there's something else too. It's a newness, a freshness that the women's game has at the moment and the men's game lost a long time ago. There's a lack of cynicism that is hugely refreshing - not necessarily in the tactics (Colombia on Wednesday night seemed profoundly committed to the dark arts of kicking the sh*t out of anything that moved), but the general air. It's a group of players under some pressure, because it's the World Cup, but not so much that it's suffocating. Playing because they genuinely want to, rather than anything else. Of course, this is a reasonably self-defeating cycle, because the weariness with the men's game comes from familiarity, and the more you watch the women's game the more the weariness may grow. But for now, it's different. Still, that doesn't stop some people from trying to ruin all the fun. Mediawatch dealt with Martin Samuel's curious article in the Daily Mail on Wednesday, in which he carefully explained why the Women's World Cup has actually been terrible and you haven't been enjoying it after all. The bit where he tried to turn a light-hearted comment by Mark Sampson into a genuine comparison between Fran Kirby and Leo Messi, then started banging on about context in the very next paragraph, was particularly delightful.

Gomez targets Liverpool first team

The 18-year-old defender played 24 times for the Addicks in his breakthrough season last term and he has targeted a starting berth at Anfield in a transfer he has described as "a dream come true". When asked if he was ready to compete for a place straight away, Gomez told the club's website: "Definitely, that's my aim. I want to come in and challenge and be involved. But I know that there's top-quality players and the centre-backs and defenders already here are great. "I'd like to come in, do my best and learn from them. "I want to get involved in the team and challenge for a place. And make my debut as soon as possible. "Long-term, I want to be a key part of the team and win trophies." The London-born Gomez, who describes himself as "a ball-playing centre-back", also revealed his desire to play under Brendan Rodgers was a deciding factor in his decision to move to Anfield. "It's a dream come true. It's a bit surreal and it hasn't really hit me yet. But I'm buzzing and just excited to get started. "Being a young player, I know that opportunities can be slim sometimes. But under a manager like Brendan, it speaks for itself. That's why I was really keen to come here and play under him. "I have met him once and he seemed really nice. It made me want to come here even more really. He just told me how good it is here and how he thinks he can help me get better, the opportunities I would get - things that would make me want to come to Liverpool." The 6ft 2in Gomez also revealed he sees his long-term future as a central defender, despite making his bow at The Valley at right-back. "I made my debut and started playing at first last season at right-back. I really enjoyed it there because I like to get forward. "But I definitely see myself as a centre-back, I feel more comfortable there and enjoy it there. So in the long-term, hopefully centre-back.

Not So Average Joe Can Break The Mould

The circle of football life goes on. A matter of days after Aston Villa secured the free transfer signing of once 'Next Big Thing' Micah Richards, the new kid on the block walks through the doors at Liverpool. Welcome to Anfield, Joseph Dave Gomez. The central defender, born in 1997 but standing at a dominant 6ft 2, could not have asked for a more fitting warning concerning his progression. Richards, a player lauded for his physical attributes at such a young age, quickly discovered the path to stardom was more than a simple sprint and a shoulder barge. Many an English prospect lies by the wayside of that particularly well-trodden path. After signing for Liverpool for a reported initial £3.5million, Gomez seems likely to greet them with a quick wave as he passes by sooner rather than later. Of course, at the same point in his respective career, Richards was already a fully-fledged England international. Still the youngest-ever defender named in a Three Lions squad, the right-back had featured 79 times for Manchester City before exiting his teenage years. With 24 first-team appearances under his belt having only just turned 18, Gomez is staring into the abyss of his potential future. It isn't just the trials and tribulations faced by Richards which Gomez will be expected to learn from. A long line of young centre-backs have tried and failed to make the grade at Anfield. Tiago Ilori, Jack Hobbs, Danny Wilson and Gabriel Paletta all serve as reminders of the difficulty of the tasks ahead. Another who struggled at Liverpool in recent years was Sebastian Coates. Reports claim that Gomez is being signed to replace the Uruguayan. It's testament to his attitude that, despite his delve into the unknown, he wouldn't settle for a bit-part role even in his first season. "Definitely, that's my aim," he said of hoping to compete for a first-team place from the start. "I want to come in and challenge and be involved. But I know that there's top-quality players and the centre-backs and defenders already here are great. I'd like to come in, do my best and learn from them."

Euro Under-21 Championship: England's hopes & stars to watch

The European Under-21 Championship starts in the Czech Republic on Wednesday with the host nation playing Denmark in the opening match. England are one of the eight teams who will be competing in the tournament, which runs from 17 to 30 June and has two groups of four, with the top two from each going through to the semi-finals. Traditionally an opportunity for us to take an early glance at some future stars, it is a compact and high-quality tournament that should provide plenty of entertainment. Do England have a chance? Yes. England travel to the Czech Republic with great expectations and as one of the favourites. Head coach Gareth Southgate is aware his team are tagged as one of the fancied sides and there is a feeling of anticipation and excitement that this squad could deliver. "We are going there with genuine belief," said Southgate. "The players have a chance to create some history." Gareth Southgate Head coach Gareth Southgate will have victory in mind - England last won at this level in 1984 They were unbeaten in qualifying, winning nine of their 10 fixtures and conceding just twice to top Group 1, and then came through a tricky play-off match against Croatia, winning both legs of their tie 2-1. Southgate's team lost 3-2 away to France in November in a friendly but that is the only recent negative, with his side chalking up impressive wins against fellow finalists Germany, Czech Republic and Portugal, who they play again in their opening group match on Thursday.

Guillem Balague analyses Barcelona and Real Madrid La Liga campaigns

The league table could have a different look about it had Sergio Busquets not come up with a life-saver of a goal deep into injury time at the Mestalla on November 30. At the time Real Madrid were top of the table and would have gone further ahead had Busquets not struck in a match that Barcelona had never looked like winning. Luis Enrique probably saw it as well. From then Barcelona lost only once, a freak 1-0 home defeat to Malaga. The second Clasico against Real Madrid was on March 22 and the chances are that whoever won this game would go on to win the title. Victory put Barcelona four points clear at the top. It wasn’t his first goal for the club but certainly the most important up to that point and served notice that the front three of Messi, Neymar and Suarez were almost unquestionably the top three-man strike force in the world. In the run in the only real banana skins facing Barcelona were Atletico Madrid and Espanyol, who never need much of an excuse to put one over their wealthy neighbours. FA Cup winners Arsenal must make statement signings this summer, says Jamie Carragher

And Sky Sports pundit Carragher said the next step must be to make the signings that will help them compete for the Premier League title next season. “Wenger has been and still is a great manager but the next step has to be a proper title challenge at least,” Carragher, writing on sports social media network Kicca, said. “You see the players coming off the bench today shows the squad strength but the first 11 still needs an upgrade in goal, CB (centre-back), DM (defensive midfielder) and CF (centre forward). “Arsenal in the last few months have looked like a top team and are only 3/4 players through the spine of the team away from Chelsea but, are those players out there? If so will Wenger make that statement with his signings that says we're going for the title like Jose (Mourinho) last year?” Arsene Wenger: Celebrates retaining the FA Cup Arsene Wenger: Celebrates retaining the FA Cup The Gunners have not won the Premier League for over a decade and finished third this season, 12 points behind champions Chelsea. But they were impressive against Villa at Wembley and were in control of the game after Walcott, who was preferred up front to Olivier Giroud, set them on their way with the opener in the 41st minute. “Theo Walcott's goal has vindicated Arsene Wenger's decision to start him as a striker,” Carragher earlier wrote. “Sanchez's role in the goal though was vital - he's got a fantastic spring... Xavi made an emotional farewell to the Nou Camp last weekend

Gareth Bale says Wales still have work to do to qualify for Euro 2016 after beating Belgium

We know what position we’re in but we’re going to enjoy this evening,” he said. “We know there is still a long way to go. Chris Coleman not getting carried away after Wales win over Belgium

Pavey became the oldest woman in history to claim gold at the European Championships in Zurich last year when she won at the age of 40 years and 325 days. The victory was the Devonshire runner's first major championship gold and came only 11 months after she had given birth to her second child. Pavey's MBE adds another highlight to a remarkable 12 months that has also seen her win bronze at the Commonwealth Games and voted third in the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year Award. Casey Stoney (right) made her England debut in 2000 Casey Stoney (right) made her England debut in 2000 "It's a huge honour for me and I'm absolutely thrilled," said Pavey. "I never thought I'd finally achieve a gold medal and it's crazy that after all those years running I finally achieved my goal when I was a busy mum. "Everything has been a big surprise and to get something like an MBE is just another surprise - it's all so surreal. "I'm so excited to go to the ceremony, it'll be certainly be nerve-wracking but to meet the Queen will be another huge moment for me." Pavey has chosen to sit out the Beijing World Championships in August to spend time with her family before she focuses on qualification for next year's Olympics in Rio. Stoney joined Chelsea at the age of 12, winning honours with several clubs before rejoining the Gunners for the 2014 season as captain. By that time she had been appointed England captain in 2012. Other women from the world of sport honoured, include UK Sport chief executive Liz Nicholl (CBE) and Alison Harris (MBE) for services to the British Horse Society and to equestrian sport in Yorkshire. Wheelchair tennis player Jordanne Whiley, who at 14 became Britain’s youngest national women’s singles champion in 2007, also gets an MBE.

Mexico makes underwhelming Copa America start

Mexico made an underwhelming start to their Copa America campaign as they were held to a goalless draw by Bolivia in Vina del Mar on Friday. The day after hosts Chile kicked the 2015 tournament off with an impressive 2-0 victory over Ecuador, Miguel Herrera's side dominated possession but created few clear-cut chances at the Estadio Sausalito as Bolivia were rewarded for a resolute defensive display with a point. Mexico striker Vicente Vuoso had the best chance of the match midway through the second half, but he glanced his point-blank header wide of the target, while team-mate Javier Aquino felt hard done by when his pleas for a late penalty fell on deaf ears. Herrera left out several of his regular players for this tournament ahead of next month's CONCACAF Gold Cup, but that did not stop his side from dominating proceedings throughout. Juan Carlos Medina volleyed narrowly wide in the 12th minute after trickery from Vuoso set up the shooting chance, while goalkeeper Romel Quinonez had to be alert to save Gerardo Flores' effort from an acute angle after he had given Bolivia's back-four the slip. Bolivia took a while to settle into the match but could have taken the lead late in the first half when Jhasmani Campos turned exquisitely and unleashed a fierce shot from 25 yards, but Mexico keeper Jesus Corona was alert and deflected the ball behind for a corner. The second half was just three minutes old when Mexico broke quickly but, after finding himself through on goal, Jesus Manuel Corona could only skew his shot wide of the target. Mexico were approaching something like their fluent best as the second half wore on but Vuoso fluffed his big chance to notch the game-winning goal in the 69th minute when he headed Corona's cross across the face of goal when he seemed destined to score. The central Americans continued to press for a winner and substitute Aquino thought he had earned his side a penalty with 10 minutes left when he went down under Alejandro Morales' challenge, but referee Enrique Caceres waved away his appeals for a spot-kick and Bolivia saw out the remaining minutes to ensure a share of the spoils.

Stuart Gray leaves Sheffield Wednesday

Chairman Dejphon Chansiri told the club’s website: “This is not a decision I have taken lightly but one that I believe is in the best interests of our club ahead of the 2015/16 season. "The club will be taking a new direction next season and it is my belief that the appointment of a new head coach will help achieve my desire of bringing Premier League football back to Hillsborough. “I would like to thank Stuart for his hard work and diligence on behalf of Sheffield Wednesday and wish him all the very best moving forward.” Wednesday were taken over by Thai businessman Chansiri in March after he paid £30m and he outlined his plan to take the Owls back to the Premier League within three years. He initially gave his backing to Gray, who delivered Wednesday's best finish since 2009, but has opted to go in a different direction. Former Wednesday players Dan Petrescu and Benito Carbone have both been linked to the role, while Glenn Roeder, who was appointed on a three-man sporting director committee in April, may also be in contention. That three-man committee, which consisted of Gray and Adam Pearson, now only consists of Roeder after Pearson left for a similar position at Leeds shortly after his appointment. The Owls have not been in the Premier League since their relegation in 1999-2000

Sky sources: Chelsea talking to Monaco over Falcao deal

Chelsea are in talks with Monaco over a deal for Radamel Falcao, Sky sources understand. Jose Mourinho said on Thursday he would love to help Falcao "reach his level again" after the striker scored just four goals during a season-long loan at Manchester United. The winger started just four Premier League matches after joining from Fiorentina in January and there was speculation that he could leave Stamford Bridge with Inter Milan and Roma linked with the player.

Brazil great Zico to stand for FIFA presidency

Former Brazil superstar Zico has confirmed he will stand for the FIFA presidency. The 62-year-old, who represented his country in three World Cups and has also managed the Brazil national team, hinted on Tuesday he may stand. Current president Sepp Blatter has announced he will stand down from the job after the organisation he has headed since 1998 was engulfed in a series of corruption allegations and Zico has now confirmed he is in the running for the top job in world football. "I feel I am capable. For sure, certain rules need to change. "It's sad for our sport to see what is happening in football today - the corruption... and the hard work of many other good people wasted. "I see it as my duty to use my experience and knowledge to try and stand for the presidency." He admits however that he may struggle to gain enough support. "That need to have five federations behind you, I think that is where the corruption starts," he said. He revealed he had come to the conclusion he ought to make a formal bid to stand after talking with former Portugal star Figo, who briefly expressed his own desire to stand for the post before pulling out last month. "I was asked if I had talked with Figo about his being a candidate for FIFA. I said I had and that set me thinking," he said. Former Tottenham and Newcastle forward David Ginola has already revealed he will enter the race once more, having pulled out of the running ahead of May's FIFA presidency election, which Blatter won before subsequently deciding to step down once a successor can be found. The man Blatter beat in the election, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, is expected to stand again, while UEFA president Michel Platini may also do so. Aaron Ramsey says Wales are ready for historical clash with Belgium in Euro 2016 qualifier

Aaron Ramsey will link up with Gareth Bale for Wales Aaron Ramsey has labelled Wales' Euro 2016 clash with Belgium as the country's biggest game for a decade. The teams will meet at Cardiff City Stadium on Friday locked at the top of Group B on 11 points after recording a goalless draw in their first encounter in Brussels in November. Wales have the chance to win their group and make their first appearance at the European Championships. Premier League set for nervy climax as Hull and Newcastle battle drop

Ed Chamberlin looks ahead to the final day of the Premier League season and asks whether Steve Bruce can pull off a "miracle". We've had some great final days in my short time presenting Super Sunday. Manchester City have twice won the title on the Premier League's final day. Last year will live long in my memory because of the thrill of being on the pitch for the trophy presentation and interviewing Vincent Kompany plus Yaya Toure and then Manuel Pellegrini, who had the class to hand back the microphone as the players picked him up to give him the bumps. WOMEN'S WORLD CUP - 11th Jun Germany (Women)vNorway Women Germany (Women)2/9 Draw5/1 Norway Women10/1 CORRECT SCORE - 11th Jun Germany (Women)vNorway Women 2-05/11-225/13-06/10-125/11-013/20-250/1Bet now Nothing, though, will ever beat the "Aguerooooo" moment in 2012. That iconic Martin Tyler commentary still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time I hear it. The genius of it was that crescendo and then the pause, which the late, great Richie Benaud would have been proud of, to let the pictures of Aguero celebrating, shirt whirling around his head, do the talking before 'the voice' produced that famous line "I swear you'll never see anything like this ever again. So watch it. Drink it in". Without doubt one of the greatest bits of commentary of all-time. And the greatest finish to a Premier League season. I arrived that day at the Etihad fully expecting it to be straightforward with Manchester City brushing QPR aside. I had a stack of notes for all eventualities in the Super Sunday studio but after 90 minutes most had gone out of the window as I was fully prepared at that point for the trophy presentation to be to Manchester United at the Stadium of Light. Then Dzeko scored, with Gary Neville stood silent next to me. Then Balotelli found Aguero and I tossed the notes in to the air. I can clearly remember the shock on Graeme Souness' face when we tried to put words to the pictures. Incredible. What will this season's final day throw up on Sunday? It's Survival Sunday this time around. Will it be Hull or Newcastle that go down? Sky Bet go 1/7 Hull, 9/2 Newcastle.

"If you think Rodgers is the right man, do you trust him with another £100m? That’s a problem for him because the recruitment this year hasn’t really worked, the players they’ve bought in haven’t been of the top level of the players who have gone out. Raheem Sterling needs to use fans to his advantage, according to Paul Gascoigne

Paul Gascoigne said Raheem Sterling should try and enjoy his football and not worry about the abuse he gets from the fans Paul Gascoigne has encouraged Raheem Sterling to use the fans to his advantage after the 20-year-old was booed in England’s goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland. Sterling, who has been plagued by criticism since rejecting a £100,000 a week contract with Liverpool, was booed by travelling England fans and was substituted after 66 minutes, with coach Roy Hodgson conceding after the match that his striker needed to “get a thicker skin” if he was to cope at an international level. But Gascogine said Sterling’s best course of action would be to channel those comments – and the crowd’s energy - to his own purposes.

The Page That Would Hang The DJ James Milner joining Liverpool is a 'step forward' (if you're a Liverpool fan), Karim Benzema and Morgan Schneiderlin are both in the bag for Man United and...

Nothing To See Here The top story on FIFA.com on Thursday at 10.30am: 'Brazil comeback confirms qualification.' Is anybody not talking about the Under-20 World Cup? Red-Tinted Glasses 'AT FIRST glance, it may seem like James Milner is taking a step down,' writes Paul Joyce of the Daily Express. Yes, Paul, it really does. 'After all, he is swapping title challengers for a team not even in the Champions League and a club with deep pockets for one alarmed by the prospect of Financial Fair Play rules being relaxed,' writes Paul Joyce of the Daily Express. Absolutely, Paul. Indeed. He has left the second-best side in England for the sixth. It's definitely a step down. 'And yet in reality Milner's free transfer move to Liverpool represents a step forward in his career,' writes Liverpool fan Paul Joyce of the Daily Express. The Transfer Trail Great news, Manchester United fans: Karim Benzema is in the bag. 'Manchester United 'confident of completing Karim Benzema transfer'' says the Metro. Bloody brilliant. Benzema scored 22 goals in all competitions last season and would be an excellent replacement for Robin van Persie. Bong! Wait a minute, we can hear the Bullsh*t Gong that sounds at the sight of the name 'Jamie Sanderson'. Maybe Benzema is not in the bag after all. Or are we being massively cynical? He writes: 'Manchester United are convinced they're set to seal the signing of Karim Benzema, according to reports.' 'Convinced' is an excellent word. But what are these reports? Squawka. Bloody Squawka. Their headline? 'Reports: Man Utd believe they can sign Karim Benzema this summer.' We have already gone from 'convinced' to 'believe they can' and we still have a 'reports'. Where to now? The trail actually ends at the Manchester Evening News with this headline: 'Manchester United looking to cushion David De Gea blow with Karim Benzema swap.' So we have gone from 'convinced' to 'believe they can' to 'looking to' in three easy steps.
