It's Not All About The Money, Money, Money... The mainstream media likes us to believe that every footballer is obsessed with money, fast cars and slow women. Sometimes 'ambition' is not a byword for 'greed'...

Christian's set to teke Kop cash' is the headline on the back page of The Sun on Tuesday; 'CHRISTIAN BENTEKE is ready to force a double-your-money move to Liverpool' is the opening paragraph; by the third paragraph we're told what that means: £50,000 a week will become £100,000 on Merseyside. Elsewhere in seven pages of football coverage in The Sun, we are told that David De Gea will be offered £250,000 a week to stay at Manchester United, Raheem Sterling would earn £150,000 a week at Manchester City, Andre Ayew will cost West Ham £70,000 a week and James Milner will turn down £135,000 a week (or £165,000, depending on which claim you read) from City. In the news pages, we learn that Adam Johnson earns £60,000 a week; we're not told whether that makes his alleged offence more or less reprehensible. The newspaper narrative is that footballers are obsessed with money, fast cars and slow women, but maybe the real obsessives are in a media that asks 'how much?' before they ask 'how good?' or even 'why?'. Heard that Benteke wants to leave Aston Villa? How much does he earn? How much would he earn? Does the second figure handily add up to double the first? If it doesn't, then make it so. Oh and add in a 'force', so it sounds like he's not only greedy but unprincipled and slightly thuggish. There are footballers who have been genuinely motivated by money - Chris Waddle did not move to Marseille to work on his French verb conjugation and whenever anybody talks about footballers and money, some wag will mention Ashley Cole almost swerving his car off the road - but not every transfer, not every contract negotiation, not every desire to leave for every footballer is about money. That's simply what the mainstream media wants you to believe. "I don't talk about how many cars I'm going to drive, how many houses I've got. I just purely want to be the best I can be," said Raheem Sterling and the nation collectively shouted 'yeah right', encouraged by a coterie of Merseyside reporters and Liverpool legends who thought that the young man from Jamaica should know his place. 'Of course it's about money,' they said. After all, why else would any player want to leave their National Trust club? To play in the Champions League and challenge for trophies? Pah. As for Benteke, the intimation is that the Belgian would be leaving Villa for a bigger wage packet; he would 'teke Kop cash'. What he would also 'teke' is a far greater long-term chance of winning silverware, European football and a place at a club currently ten places above Villa in the league. Liverpool may not match Sterling's ambitions but they might well match those of Benteke. Meanwhile, Villa might find the relegated, ambitious Charlie Austin open to a move and QPR might replace him with Jordan Rhodes if he decides he is more than a mid-table Championship striker. And every player's move will be announced with an examination of what they did earn and what they will earn, as if that were the crux of the story. "Where is he going to go that is bigger than Aston Villa?" asked Tim Sherwood as rumours of a Benteke exit surfaced once again. It was eerily similar to Brendan Rodgers and his "if you say that Manchester City is a bigger club than Liverpool, you're wrong" nonsense. To arrogant men immersed in their clubs, the only possible reason for their players to leave is for money. After all, things are always about to get really, really brilliant any minute now. The clue that money is not always the motivation lies in this piece's second paragraph. De Gea is almost certain to turn down Manchester United's lucrative offer to play for Real Madrid, challenge for both La Liga and Champions League titles and live in his native Spain again, while Milner looks increasingly likely to take a wage cut in order to play more first-team football. But those examples will not stop anybody lumping every footballer in a box labelled 'greedy b***ards'.
